Codec/Save

Codec Mode

In the main game, press to enter codec mode. The codec lets you speak with people helping you on your mission, give hints about various mysteries and questions you encounter along the way, and other valuable information.

Using the Codec

Select Frequency

Press left or right to adjust the frequency.

Contacting Someone for the First Time

Press to start a transmission. You will not be able to contact the person if you set an incorrect frequency.
Note that even if you have the right frequency, your partner may not be always be available to answer.

Exiting Codec Mode

Press while comms are closed to exit codec mode.
Press down to open the Memory Window and see a list of who you've called before. Use to select someone from the window, and press to confirm and begin calling.

Tanker Chapter

Plant Chapter

Saving

When you want to take a break, use the codec to save the game and continue from where you left off later. Your game will be saved at the most recent continue point.
In the Tanker chapter, you can save by using Otacon's dedicated save line. In the Plant chapter, you can save the game by contacting Rose.

  • "Continue point" refers to milestones in the progression of the game, such as crossing between areas, approaching a boss area, watching a story event, etc.

Codec Calls

When you receive a codec call from someone, you'll see the CALL sign. Press when the CALL sign is displayed to answer the call.
Try to accept these calls as much as you can, as they could provide important advice.
When you receive a high-priority call, the CALL sign will be red, and you will automatically be taken to the codec screen.
