Codec/Save

Press on the regular game screen to enter Codec Mode.
Use the codec to communicate with all sorts of people and ask specialists for advice on how to proceed. If you're stuck or have questions about something, try looking for help in Codec Mode.

Using the Codec

Press on the regular game screen to switch to Codec Mode.

Use or to adjust the frequency left or right.
3.
Press to begin communications. Sometimes, your contact will be unable to answer. Press while comms are open to cancel the call, and hold to fast forward.
4.
To exit Codec Mode, press while comms are closed, or press .

Call From the Memory Window

Press down with or to open the Memory Window and see a list of who you've called before.
Use or to select someone from the window, and press to confirm and begin calling.

Contact/Frequency Aid Available
Major/140.85 Snake's commanding officer, who can offer guidance with controls and clearing stages.
Para-Medic (Save Game)/140.96 The game will be saved after contacting Para-Medic.
Para-Medic/145.73 Offers expertise in medicine, flora, and fauna.
The Boss/141.80 Provides guidance on weapons, items, survival techniques, and other related topics.
  • As you progress, you'll find more contacts to add to your codec.

Saving the Game

When you want to take a break, you can save the game and continue from where you left off later. Tune the codec's frequency to 140.96 and contact Para-Medic to save the game.
The game will save your progress up to the most recent continue point. To resume the game from a save file, select LOAD GAME on the main menu.
  • A "continue point" refers to a milestone in the progression of the game, such as crossing between areas, approaching a boss area, or watching a cutscene, etc.

Codec Calls

If someone is calling you, a white CALL sign will display on the top of the screen. Press when the CALL sign is on, and you'll start conversing with the party that is calling. Codec calls are an integral source of information for carrying out missions.
When you receive a high-priority call, the CALL sign will be red, and Codec Mode will automatically open.
