LIFE
When the LIFE Gauge is empty, it's game over.
Taking damage from enemy attacks reduces LIFE, which you can restore by hiding and waiting, saving the game and resting, or using LIFE medicine.
Restoring LIFE
LIFE regenerates automatically over time. Regeneration speed depends on the Stamina Gauge—more stamina will make LIFE regenerate more quickly. Crouching or crawling will also cause LIFE to regenerate more quickly.

Serious Injuries
Falling from high places or getting hit by powerful attacks will leave you with serious injuries. While injured, a red meter will appear on the LIFE Gauge, and LIFE cannot be fully restored. Select CURE in the Survival Viewer to treat your wounds.

- With enough stamina, most serious injuries will heal with time without needing treatment. Some injuries will not heal without treatment.
Poison/Illness
You may encounter poison or illness while out on a mission. Leaving poison untreated will gradually drain your LIFE, while illnesses and leeches will drain stamina.
Select CURE in the Survival Viewer to heal yourself.

Rest
By saving and exiting the game, Snake is able to get some rest.
His LIFE Gauge will be replenished and he can recover from injury and sickness by the next time you load the game.
Stamina
When Snake runs out of stamina, his actions are affected negatively. Keep an eye on your Stamina Gauge, and eat something if it starts to run low.

Relationship between Stamina and Snake's Primary Actions
- The more Snake's stamina decreases, the slower his natural life regeneration is.
- The more his stamina decreases, the more his hands shake while aiming a weapon (in first-person).
- The more his stamina decreases, the shorter his O2 Gauge becomes.
- The more his stamina decreases, the shorter his Grip Gauge becomes.
Eating
Snake needs to eat to replenish his Stamina Gauge. He can eat animals that he catches in the jungle or rations and other items that he acquires. To eat, in the Survival Viewer select "Food".

Gauges
- Grip Gauge
This is displayed while hanging. You will fall if it reaches zero.

- O2 Gauge (oxygen gauge)
This shows how much oxygen you have remaining while underwater. Your LIFE Gauge will begin to deplete once your O2 Gauge is empty.

- The length of your Grip Gauge and O2 Gauge is affected by how much stamina you have at the time.
Special LIFE Gauges, Stamina Gauge
- Boss-Battle Gauges
The boss's LIFE Gauge (top) is depleted by damaging the boss with weapons. The boss's Stamina Gauge (bottom) is depleted by shooting the boss with tranquilizer rounds, by punching them, etc.
The battle ends once either the boss's LIFE Gauge or Stamina Gauge is depleted.

- Partner LIFE Gauge
When accompanied by someone, their LIFE Gauge and Stamina Gauge will also be displayed on screen. The game is over if your partner runs out of LIFE.
