LIFE GAUGE
When it drops to zero, the game is over.
When Snake is hit by an attack, his Life Gauge decreases. If he runs out of Life, it's game over.

LIFE GAUGE
- Recovers automatically over time. Use a recovery item or rest while crouching or lying down to refill the gauge more quickly.

STRESS LEVEL
- Affects Psyche depletion.
Being in hot and cold places, getting spotted by the enemy, and carrying around heavy gear all raise Snake's stress level.

PSYCHE GAUGE
- Snake's mental stamina. It affects the refill rate of his Life Gauge, his firing accuracy, and his ability to perform actions.
If Snake's Stress Level is high, the gauge will steadily deplete. It can be replenished by resting.
COMBAT HIGH
Firing a certain number of shots in Alert Phase will give Snake a combat high.
His Psyche Gauge won't deplete as long as the high lasts, and he'll take less damage from attacks as well.

ENEMY ALERT PHASES
The enemy has 4 Alert Phases.
When the counter reaches zero, the enemy shifts to the next phase.
If the enemy finds Snake, a countdown for the alert phase will appear at the top of the screen.
- NORMAL PHASE
The enemy is unaware of Snake's presence. - Snake is discovered

The enemy has found Snake and is attacking.
- Snake hides where the enemy can't see him

EVASION PHASE
The enemy loses sight of Snake and searches for him.

The enemy gives up searching, but is still on guard.
